Founding

102 Years ago

Founded in 1924 by the internationally renowned Buddhist scholar Dr. Junjiro Takakusu , Musashino University celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2024.Rooted in the ideal of character development based on Buddhist principles, the university advocated for the necessity of women’s education and women’s participation in society even before World War II. This led to the founding of the “ Musashino joshi gakuin” to embody these ideals.Following the transition to coeducation in 2004, the university has driven forward with reforms, evolving into a comprehensive university with 13 Faculty21 departments, 14 Graduate Schoolresearch schools, and School of Distance Learning, and continues to evolve toward the next 100 years.

The university has signed agreements with 131 universities in 35 countries around the world, and Facultyapproximately one in every 12 enrolled students takes on the challenge of studying abroad. By introducing a four-semester system and refining the curriculum, the university has enhanced its study abroad programs to meet student needs, whether through on-site or online learning, or long-term or short-term stays.
